Hoons driven out of train station car park

• Hooning deterrents installed in multi-storey car park at Edgewater Station
• Increased monitoring of anti-social driving behavior in adjacent areas

Late last year a local Edgewater resident contacted her local MP, Emily Hamilton, with regard to excessive noise and hooning taking place around the Edgewater Station multi-storey car park, close to her home.

Ms Hamilton raised the concerns with the Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti. Recently, modifications have been made to the entrance and exit of the Edgewater Station multi-storey car park.

The Public Transport Authority (PTA) have installed a Cable Gate—a metal cable fixed between two bollards. A timer activates the cable to rise once train services end for the day. A button inside the car park allows people to exit the car park after hours.

Onsite signage has been updated to reflect these afterhours car parking arrangements.

In addition, the PTA’s Central Monitoring Room, which operates 24/7, will closely monitor vision from the car park’s CCTV cameras. Particular attention will be paid from 8pm each evening to ensure that any further anti-social behaviour will be responded to by PTA’s security staff.

Additional police patrols will now be conducted at the car park and Joondalup Drive, where issues have occurred in the past. Joondalup Police are currently investigating one of the incidents, using phone footage.

Members of the public can report anti-social driver behaviour online at www.police.wa.gov.au/Your-Safety/Antisocial-behaviour/Reporting-hoon-behaviour or by calling police on 131 444.

Comments attributed to Emily Hamilton:
“Residents adjacent to the carpark were distressed by repeated nights of broken sleep and were worried about the anti-social behavior taking place close to their homes.

“Road safety and the safety of public transport patrons is an important issue. Train station car parks should not be used for anti-social behavior.

“I’m proud to have been able to advocate for our community and to ensure deterrents were put in place to prevent reckless and inconsiderate driver behaviour.”
