New sea rescue vessel launched

• Marine Rescue Whitfords has a new rescue boat, RV Ken Blackie
• The $266,000 rescue vessel is named after one of the organisation’s inaugural volunteers
At Sunday’s Open Day for Marine Rescue Whitfords, Ms Emily Hamilton, State Member of Parliament for Joondalup, praised the organisation for its contribution to keeping our community safe on the water.
This marine rescue group is one of the largest and busiest volunteer sea rescue groups in Western Australia. Its operational range stretches from City Beach to Alkimos and 30 nautical miles out to sea. In the last year more than 210 searches and rescue missions were carried out.
The group has 130 active volunteer members operating purpose-built rescue vessels and a 24/7 radio service.
Ms Hamilton was pleased to be part of celebrations for the launch of the new rescue vessel, named after Ken Blackie who has been a loyal volunteer with the organisation over the past 48 years.
RV Ken Blackie is a fast response vessel, designed for functionality as well as crew comfort. Large windows provide excellent all round visibility and the rear deck is set up for pulling people from the water and treating the injured.
Modern radio and satellite phone technology enable the crew to communicate directly for the first time with other emergency services personnel.
The $266,000 vessel is part of the McGowan Government's record $19.5 million investment in Western Australia's marine rescue groups.
