“The Edgewater community has expressed to me it is dissatisfied with the current City of Joondalup Edgewater Quarry Draft Preferred Concept Plan to develop Edgewater Quarry park.

Local residents in Edgewater voiced concerns regarding City of Joondalup plans for development of the Edgewater Quarry site to Member for Joondalup Emily Hamilton at a recent Annual General Meeting of the Edgewater Community Residents’ Association (ECRA).

Last Thursday, City of Joondalup opened community consultation on the preferred concept plan for the Edgewater Quarry.

The document reflects input from the Edgewater Quarry Reference Group, but locals that have raised their concerns with Ms Hamilton are appalled at the lack of meaningful engagement with the broader community prior to arriving at this draft preferred concept plan.

Any major developments, including a road through Edgewater Quarry park and housing developments, as is currently on the draft preferred concept plan, are not supported by locals some of whom are members of ECRA.

ECRA have been talking with their membership about what they would like to see at the site and further, there is an Edgewater’s Quarry Park action group that has a strong voice on redevelopment plans for this public open space that needs to be heard.

Comments attributed to Emily Hamilton MLA, Member for Joondalup:

“The Edgewater community has expressed to me it is dissatisfied with the current City of Joondalup Edgewater Quarry Draft Preferred Concept Plan to develop Edgewater Quarry park.

“Residents have spoken to City of Joondalup over many years about what a development on this site could look like and feel this proposed plan has not taken their views into account.”

“I urge the city to pause the community consultation process until there has been meaningful engagement with the community and a plan proposed that reflects these views.

“The City of Joondalup community consultation period on the Edgewater Quarry preferred concept plan is open until Wednesday 11 November 2020. I encourage residents to have their say on the plan.”

Comments attributed to Beth Hewitt, ECRA Secretary:

“We have a lot of concerned members that are worried about the City of Joondalup’s plans for a development at Edgewater Quarry park that will benefit commercial developers, not locals.

“The quarry park is the only public open space in the northern end of Edgewater and as such is a place that is used by the community to exercise, walk dogs, fly kites, hit a ball and ride bikes.

“ECRA members aren’t against enhancing Edgewater Quarry park, but they would like to be involved in the planning of what the park may look like in the future.
