Joondalup MP calls for locals to support Share the Dignity campaign

3 April 2019

• Member for Joondalup, Emily Hamilton MLA, collects donations of sanitary items for Share the Dignity’s 2019 April Dignity Drive

Each night in Australia, over 85,000 women and teenage girls are homeless. Family violence is the number one reason people present to homeless services.

Share the Dignity has #DignityDrives in April and August each year, when it asks for donations of pads and tampons at collection points around Australia.

At the end of the month, the organisation distributes thousands of packets of sanitary products to women in need through partner charities.

Donating gives hygiene essentials to women experiencing homelessness or financial crisis. People can choose to donate money instead.

The 2019 April Dignity Drive will run throughout the month of April. Ms Hamilton is collecting donations for the appeal at her electorate office at 2/1 Wise Street, Joondalup.

Comments attributed to Jan Lewsey, volunteer WA charity coordinator for Share the Dignity:

“Our collection events would not be a success without the generous assistance of people like Ms Hamilton who help us raise awareness of the problem of period poverty.

“Together, we can ensure that women and girls living in poverty, experiencing homelessness, or fleeing domestic violence are afforded the dignity they deserve.”

Comments attributed to Emily Hamilton:

“Having access to clean and safe sanitary items and facilities is something most women in our community take for granted.

“I’m pleased to support Share the Dignity’s 2019 April Dignity Drive.”
