A re-elected McGowan Labor Government will deliver $94,000 to Youth Futures’ NEST program to support struggling young mothers in the northern suburbs.

Youth Futures’ NEST program helps teenage parents who are homeless or are living in unsuitable conditions and are at risk of their child coming into the care of the state.

The funding will be used to provide support for young parents in the northern suburbs, with items including furniture, nappies, baby food and clothing.

Comments by Emily Hamilton MLA, Member for Joondalup:

“Young mothers may experience mental health issues, financial hardship, unstable and inadequate housing and rely on public transport, which can all be barriers to accessing the support services they need.

“Youth Futures’ NEST program provides an invaluable accommodation and outreach service to teenage mothers and their children, with safe and secure single-dwelling accommodation for up to 18 months.

“During this time, the young mothers are also provided with help to address their underlying issues, develop their parenting skills, and plan for a secure and brighter future.

“Youth Futures operates the NEST program with individual, family, business and corporate donations, and this funding will help provide that extra assistance to young mums.”
