Northern suburbs to benefit from new, cheaper METRONET public transport fares under a re-elected McGowan Labor Government

18 January 2021

  • A re-elected McGowan Labor Government will slash public transport fares to the northern suburbs
  • All metropolitan fares will be capped at a 2 Zone price
  • New policy could save some local residents thousands of dollars each year
  • Smartrider ticketing systems will also receive a $24 million upgrade so passengers can choose to pay by credit card, debit card or smartphone payment

A re-elected McGowan Labor Government will cap the price of train and bus tickets to a standard 2 Zone fare – saving some northern suburbs residents thousands of dollars each year.

Yanchep residents would save up to $4.70 on a cash price per trip under the policy, or $3.76 for a Smartrider fare. Concession fares to the city, which are currently $4.10 will be capped at $2.10, saving up to $2 per trip under the policy.

As a result, passengers will save time and money when trains start running on the METRONET Yanchep rail extension.

Regular passengers to the CBD from Yanchep could save up to $2350 per year for a cash fare or $1880 for a Smartrider as a result of the $60.6 million investment by a re-elected McGowan Labor Government. Concession fares will save up to $1000 per year for a cash fare or $800 for a Smartrider.

Clarkson residents could save up to $1000 per year for a cash fare to the CBD or $800 per year for a Smartrider, with Joondalup, and Hillarys residents potentially saving up to $450 per year for a cash fare or $360 for a Smartrider.

This fare relief, to begin in January 2022, will significantly benefit families who live in the outer suburbs but travel into the city every day, making the public transport system in WA fairer and equitable.

It’s expected the cheaper, reduced fare structure will result in an increase in patronage on our buses and trains, potentially taking 5,300 cars off our roads everyday and equalling up to 1.93 million less car trips each year, easing congestion throughout the metropolitan area.

The upgraded Smartrider ticketing system will give passengers the choice of tagging on, using credit and debit cards or smartphones – making it easier for West Australians and tourists exploring our great city.

The McGowan Labor Government has commenced METRONET, the biggest public transport infrastructure project in Western Australia’s history, to deliver better public transport options to Western Australians and create thousands of local jobs in the process.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

“We’re building METRONET, with locally built trains, and a re-elected WA Labor Government will slash public transport fares.

“As a result of our strong budget management, we can introduce a new METRONET fare structure that delivers affordable options for passengers, no matter where they live across our suburbs.

“This will help ease financial pressure on families in the outer suburbs, making it more affordable to get to work and school, while also ensuring our public transport system is fair and equitable.

“The WA Labor Government is embarking on the biggest public transport infrastructure build in the State’s history, with nine major METRONET projects under construction, linking our suburbs and easing congestion on our roads.”

Comments attributed to Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:

“Residents that catch the bus or train from Joondalup or Edgewater will save up to 90 cents a trip for a cash fare or 72 cents for a Smartrider fare.

“Only WA Labor will deliver for Joondalup and Edgewater families on cost of living and public transport and only a re-elected McGowan Labor Government will keep our community safe and strong.”

Comments attributed to Butler MLA John Quigley:

“When the trains start running to Yanchep as part of the METRONET project in early 2022, local residents will be able to choose between catching a train or a bus to the city at the flat rate of $4.90 cash or $3.92 with a Smartrider.

“This is a significant saving that will really go a long way towards helping alleviate cost of living pressures for people living in Yanchep.”

Comments attributed to Burns Beach MLA Mark Folkard:

“This policy represents a massive saving to a family that regularly takes public transport into the city and it is something that I am very happy to promote.

“Thanks to the sound financial management by the McGowan Labor Government, we are now able to implement policies such as this which will help people with their day to day living expenses.”

Comments to be attributed to WA Labor Candidate for Hillarys Caitlin Collins:

“People I speak to tell me that the McGowan Government has done a great job getting the State’s finances back in order.

“I am delighted that a re-elected McGowan Government will invest in local families by making public transport more affordable.”
