An Age-friendly WA: State Seniors Strategy 2023-2033 is a 10-year, whole-of-government approach to support older Western Australians of all backgrounds to live their best life as they age.

Seniors here in Joondalup and right across WA had their say in developing the strategy.

At a northern suburbs community consultation there was discussion on issues, including: easily accessible information, housing, loneliness and mental health, support for independent living, carers rights and advocacy.

The State Seniors Strategy will guide whole of community actions that are responsive to older people’s wants, needs and aspirations to make WA a place where seniors can live their best lives.

The Strategy identifies four key pillars of change: Thriving physically, mentally, and spiritually; Safe and friendly communities; Staying connected and engaged; and Having views that are heard.

Comments attributed to Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:

“The McGowan Labor Government is passionate about ensuring that WA seniors are provided with the support they need to leadS fulfilling lives.

“I would like to thank all Joondalup seniors who participated in the consultation process.”

“Our Government is already investing in a range of initiatives to support seniors including the $400 Safety and Security rebate and $4 million to establish Elder Rights WA and many more.”

Comments attributed to Disability Services Minister Don Punch:

“We all need to recognise and further value the wisdom and experience of seniors as well as their life-long contributions to the community.

“The new State Seniors Strategy provides a strong, cohesive vision along with the first five-year Action Plan to support and promote seniors, ensure community involvement, and drive government change.

“Eliminating ageism in WA is at the heart of the 10-year strategy and will be significant in the way we move forward and enable seniors to prosper.”
